Welcome to the most isolated city in Australia! Perth claims to be the most remote city in the world, it isn't, but it is the most remote major city in Australia. It's small for a major city, but still lively and vibrant. I loved it from the very minute I stepped foot in town. The city has a very hipster vibe, and the street style is straight out of the '90s. Fashion is truly cyclical. Perth is the capital of the state of Western Australia. The state covers 1/3 of Australia's landmass, but is home to only 11% of Australians. Here are some fun facts about Western Australia: Fun Facts about Western Australia (WA) 1. The closest major city to Perth is Adelaide - 1,370 miles away. No matter which way you drive out of Perth, you'll be seeing a few days of red desert! 2. If WA were its own country, it would be in the top 10 largest countries in the world. 3. Perth is closer to Singapore and much of Southeast Asia than it is to Sydney. 4. Perth has the highest number of self made millionaires per capita in the world. 5. In the late 1800's people flocked to WA after gold was discovered, much like the American gold rush 6. Heath Ledger was born in Perth I spent my first night in town at this night market! One of my favorite things to do on holiday is to stroll and munch my way through markets. They're also a great place to pick up unique, local gifts. The markets separated the CBD (Central Business District) from the bar and clubbing district (where my hostel was). A short walk through the CBD ends with this gorgeous harbor view. Perth city is not on the ocean, this is a river that feeds into the ocean. There are a lot of nice beaches out in the suburbs, only 30 minutes by train from the city. They're too cold this time of year for swimming, unfortunately. But they do have killer west coast sunsets that you don't ever get in Sydney! I spent a few days exploring the city center and taking in the beautiful, unique architecture. In the first few pictures below you can see the contrasting architectural styles, where the old meets the new. If you were expecting Perth to be a little, no major industry town, you couldn't be more wrong! It's probably the most under the radar major city in Australia, but sometimes the best things are the best kept secrets! This picture below is looking back at the CBD from the pedestrian bridge over the harbor. With all of these businesses and banks, Perth is definitely thriving as the hub of Western Australia. Out for a walk in King's Park, the largest city park in the world Back in the square where the night markets were. It definitely looks different during the day without all the market stalls. |
